Illuminate Heritage: Lightscapes of Lexington is a community projection mapping initiative created by students from the Youth STEAM Initiative that combines technology, art, storytelling, music, and civic engagement to celebrate the people and organizations that make Lexington a vibrant community.
Students collaborated with local artists, educators, musicians, community organizations, and mentors to transform the historic Lexington Depot into an immersive digital canvas. Through animation, projection mapping, photography, and original multimedia content, the project explored the idea of everyday "citizen heroes" whose actions strengthen the community.
The inaugural public showcase took place on May 30, 2026, bringing together more than 200 community members to experience a visual story built from 108 photographs submitted by 32 local organizations. Families, students, volunteers, and community partners gathered to celebrate Lexington through the power of STEAM and collaborative storytelling.
The project demonstrates how students can use creativity, programming, digital media, and design to create meaningful public art experiences that inspire civic engagement and community connection.
